NEA Part 2 - Intertextuality In The Media
20/03/19
Lesson Objective:
K: The concept of intertextuality.
U: How the concept of intertextuality is used in media texts.
BAT: Analyse media texts using intertextuality.
CO: Use media terminology throughout.
In this task I am going to research different examples of intertextuality in the media. Intertextuality is when media texts such as magazines or films make reference to other media texts. Intertextuality is not always obvious and may only be understood by specific people. Furthermore some media texts that use intertextuality may only relate to people who share similar interests, of a similar age or background.
Examples of intertextuality in magazines :
This magazine makes reference to the Bond films. Therefore this is known as intertextuality because it makes reference to another media text. Intertextuality is used to attract audiences who prefer one specific type of media such as the Bond films to view another media type because it relates to the audiences interests. Also it shows how that specific media text may have been inspired and influenced by other media texts. The effect this has on its audience is that it makes the reader have a connection to the magazine because they may have similar interests. For example intertextuality would effect the audience of this magazine because people who enjoy Bond films would be more engaged with mens vogue magazine.
This magazine uses intertextuality because on the front cover it shows Vanessa Hudgens who has been in films such as high-school musical and therefore the shout magazine makes reference to films because they have used a character that has featured in other films. The purpose of this is that it may draw viewers of films such as high school musical to their magazine. Therefore it is important for media producers to embrace intertextuality because it may bring more attention to their particular media product.
Conclusion :
Intertextuality could possibly be used in my brief of a magazine through dialogue. It can be presented through using references from famous bakers in order to make links to the media texts from my magazine. Another possible way I could use intertextuality in my brief is by showing a small section of the front cover of my magazine dedicated to information about a competition that the reader could enter. The competition could be related to baking and intertextuality because it could be about winning to be taught a lesson about baking by a specific baker etc or meeting up with a famous baker.
